5 Easy Ways to Feed Your Creativity this Holiday Season
Dec 17, 2019
The holidays are a wonderful time of year, but we all know that it can also be a stressful time. Between shopping for gifts, traveling, and less-than-ideal family dynamics, it can be hard to find opportunities for that cozy winter recharge we all want.
As songwriters, we all know how creativity feeds our soul, releases our emotions, and keeps us grounded. Unfortunately, it often gets sacrificed when we’re busy with the holidays.
We’ve compiled a list of 5 easy ways you can keep your creativity flowing this holiday season while helping you get into the holiday spirit! It’s a win-win.
5 Easy Ways to Feed Your Creativity this Holiday Season
1. Lead a Holiday Sing-a-long.
Who doesn’t love to gather around a piano or guitar and belt out some classic holiday jams? Even your tone-deaf Aunt Betty can’t resist! You’ll be the life of the party AND you’ll get the creative benefit of learning new music. Here are a few lists of holiday songs to get you started. https://www.bellandcomusic.com/christmas-carols.html http://musicproductionhq.com/popular-christmas-songs-guitar-chords-lyrics/
2. Write an Original Holiday Song.
An original carol is the ultimate gift to give your family, or yourself. You can make it funny, specific to your family, or write something more personal and meaningful to you and your loved ones. You can even make it a family activity and try inviting your relatives to co-write with you! There are so many ways that it can be done and it could be the start of a beautiful new holiday tradition.
3. Make a Non-Musical Homemade Gift.
You don’t have to make music to feed your creativity this holiday season. There are so many different ways to be creative and they will all feed back into your music in positive ways. You can bake cookies, draw homemade cards for your family, take up a knitting project, make facials scrubs, or essential oil candles. It’s easier than you might think and it’ll fill you up with creative joy and pride.
4. Watch a New Holiday Movie.
This is an easy one! All you have to do is cozy up with a mug of hot chocolate and turn on Netflix. There is no shortage of holiday movies and chances are you have not seen ALL OF THEM. Instead of watching Elf for the 50th time, get inspired with an old black and white romance, or a strangely creepy animated 80’s classic. Here’s a list to give you some inspiration.
5. Discover New Holiday Music.
Much like the last recommendation, this is an easy one that often gets overlooked. There is an over-abundance of holiday music in the world, but we can tend to listen to the same music every year for nostalgia's sake. Listening to new music is essential for your own creativity and holiday music is no exception! Here are a few of our personal recommendations that may not be in your repertoire.
Sufjan Stevens: Silver & Gold, Songs for Christmas
David Bazan: Dark Sacred Night
Ingrid Michaelson: Ingrid Michealson’s Songs for the Season (Yes, we sang on this one!)
Vince Guaraldi Trio: A Charlie Brown Christmas Soundtrack
We hope that this list gives you some inspiration to make creativity a part of your holiday season, even if it’s in a restorative sense. Remember that this can be the perfect time to rest, consume new art, and fill up your cup.

Happy Holidays and Happy Writing,
